about

The Condition is the debut album from duo DIAMOND MOUTH. The duo introduces a transcendent universe, which rests securely in its own dense combination of abrupt cuts and foggy fades, symphonic build-up, and minimal white noise. It unlocks a fluid state between deep REM-sleep and wide-awake attention.

DIAMOND MOUTH is an all-new collaboration between vocalist Ane Trolle and producer Anders Dixen. The two Danish artists each come from – and have left their individual marks on – different parts of the Copenhagen experimental music scene.

Well-known from her collaborations with international dub hitters Trentemøller and Trolle//Siebenhaar, Ane Trolle’s raw, silky vocals transport the listener into a world of drowsy yet profound daydreams. Similarly, Anders Dixen has been an undeniable force in the Danish clubbing scene under his alias Unkwon as well as part of the AV AV AV constellation.

DIAMOND MOUTH is a duo established on a basis of mutual respect, electro-acoustic curiosity, and personal intuition.

Debut album The Condition ranges from chill wave over industrial ambient, and post-romantic noise to fragmented, dream-like pop. Moods are constantly introduced and dissolved, cutting between sonic sentiments as if cutting between scenes in a movie. All the while giving subtle hints to genres such as minimal, drone, grunge, post-rock, and folk.

The Duo’s first release is an ambitious hybrid, additionally reinforced by contributions from Steve Borth (sax), Mads Hyhne (trombone), and Anna-Maria Hefele (harp and overtone singing).

The Condition is recorded on the Danish island of Samsoe in the early Spring of 2019. The album’s soundtrack-like character derives from Trolle and Dixen’s intense stay in the middle of the island’s all-enshrouding fog. In a similarly comatose and nebulous way, the 11 tracks crosscut in and out of heavy bass beats and sweeping panoramas over the effect-packed, ambient sonic landscape.

Rather than entering a studio, the duo chose to record in adjoining living rooms. This enabled them to work both collaboratively and on their own, in an alternating, effectful inspiration process. This freedom of movement within the project has allowed Trolle to play with her songwriting, while allowing Dixen to improvise ambiguous melodies. The vocals lean into the music and move along-side it, rather than stepping in front. The lyrics dare to doubt, ask open questions, and surrender to an introvert stream of consciousness, where context and meaning are only just apparent as flashes in the fog that envelops DIAMOND MOUTH’s expansive, electronic soundscape.

Anders Dixen’s command of the upright piano, guitar, drum machine, and modular synth connects DIAMOND MOUTH’s universe with sound artists such as Tim Hecker, Onehotrix Point Never, and Nils Frahm. Accompanied by Ane Trolle’s delicately twisted lyrics and vocal, the sounds disperse like light reflecting off a diamond.
